OCR Nationals are assessed entirely by the coursework students produce in lessons. Each unit of work is allocated either 30 or 60 guided learning hours during which students will learn the skills needed for the unit and then complete the assignment to be assessed.
There are four courses that students can choose to complete. The table below shows these and explains to what each one is equivalent.
| Course | Number of Units | GCSE Equivalent |
| First Award | 1.5 | 1 GCSE at A-C |
| Award | 3 | 2 GCSEs at A-C |
| First Certificate | 4.5 | 3 GCSEs at A-C |
| Certificate | 6 | 4 GCSE's at A-C |
Each course is graded as below:
| Grade | GCSE Equivalent |
| Pass | C |
| Merit | B |
| Distinction | A |
