Student Voice at Horbury School
Youth Parliament
Youth Parliament is an organisation which aims to get the voices of youths heard. I have been elected as a Deputy Member of UK Youth Parliament. The whole of Wakefield Secondary Schools and the 11 year olds of some primary schools elected me as DMYP. I have to go to weekly meeting with the rest of the Wakefield Youth Parliament and also every few months the Yorkshire and Humberside region, have a regional meeting. The next regional meeting, is in Wakefield it will be held at the Wakefield Youth Centre ‘City Limits’ it is on 22nd June and me, Emma (MYP) and Eoghan (DMYP) have organized it. Wakefield and Yorkshire’s campaign this year is the environment, so we will try get young people and their families involved in recycling and later on in the year we are organising a ‘GREEN DAY’ for Wakefield Schools and Authorities.
Matthew Kent (DMYP)
Junior Leadership Team

Tom Brammer, Gareth Cotton, Lucy Denton, Will Dyson, Laura Heppleston, Matthew Kent, Beth Seneviratne-Eglin and Melissa Stead are members of the Junior Leadership Team.
This is what they said about it:
TOM: I’d like to bring more of a sense of community to HorburySchool. We should ensure that we back up our reputation as a good school and develop it.
GARETH: The purpose of the JLT is to improve the quality of the student voice within the school through mutual understanding of how the school is run.
We are going to take a close look at what goes on behind the scenes, and this means that we will actually be shadowing the Senior Leadership Team. Tom, for example, represents a deputy head.
LUCY: We hope to be breaking down the barriers which can arise when not enough talking goes on.
WILL: I think HorburySchool should always strive to be the best. On the question of litter, for example, we should be the cleanest.
LAURA: I am willing to help any student to put over a point of view, particularly if it has to do with teaching and learning.
MATTHEW: I believe in encouraging people to use their own initiative to improve themselves. We should be helping each other.
BETH: The JLT should promote the school in every way by making sure that all student views are expressed.
MELISSA: Teaching can sometimes be improved if there is more student involvement. I see it as connected with the whole idea of learning conversations.
